You worked hard all off- season to bulk up and you felt great playing at your new weight, but now the number on the scale is dropping, and your play is suffering. With the hectic schedule of practices, workouts, games and classes, keeping your weight up can be difficult. To make matters worse, the most crucial games come in October and November, and that's when you want to be your biggest and strongest—but the long grind of the season may have already caused you to lose significant weight and muscle mass. But have no fear—STACK is here to help. There are a number of simple tricks and methods you can use to increase the number of calories and protein you consume on a daily basis, which in turn will help you keep on weight and stay strong into the playoffs. Here are seven simple tricks for keeping weight on during football season. Put Peanut Butter on (Almost) Everything. Peanut butter is the spread of the gods. It tastes amazing, it goes with everything and it's easy to keep a jar handy almost anywhere. It's also great for adding quality calories and protein to your diet if you're looking to bulk up. That means you can consume quite a few eggs before you start feeling full, which is exactly what you want when you're trying to gain or keep on weight. Simple carbs like fruits, potatoes, white rice, honey, jams and jellies give you a quick burst of energy, making them ideal for shortly before a workout or at halftime. Complex carbs like brown rice, whole grains (breads, cereals, pastas), beans and lentils give you longer lasting energy, which makes them great choices for breakfast or a mid- afternoon snack. Merely getting the executives to acknowledge some culpability was an important first step, he knew, so his plan would start off with a small but crucial move: the industry should use the expertise of scientists — its own and others — to gain a deeper understanding of what was driving Americans to overeat. Once this was achieved, the effort could unfold on several fronts. To be sure, there would be no getting around the role that packaged foods and drinks play in overconsumption. They would have to pull back on their use of salt, sugar and fat, perhaps by imposing industrywide limits. But it wasn’t just a matter of these three ingredients; the schemes they used to advertise and market their products were critical, too. Mudd proposed creating a “code to guide the nutritional aspects of food marketing, especially to children.”“We are saying that the industry should make a sincere effort to be part of the solution,” Mudd concluded. But according to three participants, when Mudd stopped talking, the one C. E. O. His name was Stephen Sanger, and he was also the person — as head of General Mills — who had the most to lose when it came to dealing with obesity. Under his leadership, General Mills had overtaken not just the cereal aisle but other sections of the grocery store. The company’s Yoplait brand had transformed traditional unsweetened breakfast yogurt into a veritable dessert. It now had twice as much sugar per serving as General Mills’ marshmallow cereal Lucky Charms. And yet, because of yogurt’s well- tended image as a wholesome snack, sales of Yoplait were soaring, with annual revenue topping $5. Emboldened by the success, the company’s development wing pushed even harder, inventing a Yoplait variation that came in a squeezable tube — perfect for kids. They called it Go- Gurt and rolled it out nationally in the weeks before the C. E. O. General Mills, he said, acted responsibly to both the public and shareholders by offering products to satisfy dieters and other concerned shoppers, from low sugar to added whole grains. But most often, he said, people bought what they liked, and they liked what tasted good. General Mills would not pull back. He would push his people onward, and he urged his peers to do the same. Sanger’s response effectively ended the meeting.“What can I say?” James Behnke told me years later. These guys weren’t as receptive as we thought they would be.” Behnke chose his words deliberately. But I was also struck by how prescient the organizers of the sit- down had been. Today, one in three adults is considered clinically obese, along with one in five kids, and 2. Americans are afflicted by type 2 diabetes, often caused by poor diet, with another 7. Even gout, a painful form of arthritis once known as “the rich man’s disease” for its associations with gluttony, now afflicts eight million Americans. The public and the food companies have known for decades now — or at the very least since this meeting — that sugary, salty, fatty foods are not good for us in the quantities that we consume them. So why are the diabetes and obesity and hypertension numbers still spiraling out of control? It’s not just a matter of poor willpower on the part of the consumer and a give- the- people- what- they- want attitude on the part of the food manufacturers. What I found, over four years of research and reporting, was a conscious effort — taking place in labs and marketing meetings and grocery- store aisles — to get people hooked on foods that are convenient and inexpensive. I talked to more than 3. C. E. O.’s. Some were willing whistle- blowers, while others spoke reluctantly when presented with some of the thousands of pages of secret memos that I obtained from inside the food industry’s operations. What follows is a series of small case studies of a handful of characters whose work then, and perspective now, sheds light on how the foods are created and sold to people who, while not powerless, are extremely vulnerable to the intensity of these companies’ industrial formulations and selling campaigns. I. The Beach Boys, ZZ Top and Cher all stipulated in their contract riders that it be put in their dressing rooms when they toured. Hillary Clinton asked for it when she traveled as first lady, and ever after her hotel suites were dutifully stocked. What they all wanted was Dr Pepper, which until 2. Coca- Cola and Pepsi. But then a flood of spinoffs from the two soda giants showed up on the shelves — lemons and limes, vanillas and coffees, raspberries and oranges, whites and blues and clears — what in food- industry lingo are known as “line extensions,” and Dr Pepper started to lose its market share. One particularly promising market, Kilduff pointed out, was the “rapidly growing Hispanic and African- American communities.”But consumers hated Red Fusion. Ordinary consumers are paid to spend hours sitting in rooms where they touch, feel, sip, smell, swirl and taste whatever product is in question. Their opinions are dumped into a computer, and the data are sifted and sorted through a statistical method called conjoint analysis, which determines what features will be most attractive to consumers. Moskowitz likes to imagine that his computer is divided into silos, in which each of the attributes is stacked. But it’s not simply a matter of comparing Color 2. Color 2. 4. In the most complicated projects, Color 2. Syrup 1. 1 and Packaging 6, and on and on, in seemingly infinite combinations. Even for jobs in which the only concern is taste and the variables are limited to the ingredients, endless charts and graphs will come spewing out of Moskowitz’s computer. Many of the Prego sauces — whether cheesy, chunky or light — have one feature in common: The largest ingredient, after tomatoes, is sugar. A mere half- cup of Prego Traditional, for instance, has the equivalent of more than two teaspoons of sugar, as much as two- plus Oreo cookies. It also delivers one- third of the sodium recommended for a majority of American adults for an entire day. In making these sauces, Campbell supplied the ingredients, including the salt, sugar and, for some versions, fat, while Moskowitz supplied the optimization. As we talked, he made clear that while he has worked on numerous projects aimed at creating more healthful foods and insists the industry could be doing far more to curb obesity, he had no qualms about his own pioneering work on discovering what industry insiders now regularly refer to as “the bliss point” or any of the other systems that helped food companies create the greatest amount of crave. I was struggling to survive and didn’t have the luxury of being a moral creature. More recently Victoria Beckman has taken centre stage, following rumours that she drinks pu- erh tea, an ancient Chinese brew that reportedly helps you stay slim and keeps you looking younger! Burning More Calories. But whilst green tea and pu- erh tea have made headlines thanks to their celebrity followers, they aren’t the only brews that have been linked with shifting those pounds. A quick Internet search reveals there are literally hundreds of teas that claim to help us lose weight – and most of them are about as far away from a cup of Earl Grey as you can get when it comes to taste and expense! Amongst one of the most popular is Wulong or oolong – a tea that falls somewhere between black and green tea and reportedly boosts metabolism. Boost Energy Levels and Metabolism. Porangaba tea has received recent media interest following reports that Brazilian babes frequently drink it from beach stands in Rio. The brew, which is made from the leaves of a small tree found in the Amazon, apparently suppresses appetite, boosts metabolism and increases energy levels. Weight Loss Benefits. Okinawan tea is another variety that frequently gets promoted for its weight loss benefits. But read beyond the hype and it’s simply a variety of green tea that’s frequently drunk by people living on the Japanese island of Okinawa. Green tea weight loss works because it does not require you to eat a very low calorie diet. Scientific studies have discovered that the main ingredients responsible. Adding to the confusion are the large number of herbal teas that sometimes link themselves with weight loss, thanks to specific herbs they contain. Herbal teas that include dandelion or nettle – two herbs that are considered to have diuretic properties – often claim to eliminate excess water and so reduce weight. Teas that contain fennel – an ingredient that reportedly suppresses appetite – sometimes make claims related to weight loss. Slimming Claim. You don’t even need to surf the Net, take a trip to Chinatown or visit your local health food shop to get hold of slimming teas, many are now available in supermarkets. Birt & Tang’s Figuro Herbal Tea is available in Sainsbury's and combines pu- erh tea with cassia tora, apple, water lily leaf, Oriental water plantain, Tianyeju, tangerine peel, notoginseng, Chinese cinnamon and cloves. And whilst, the product doesn’t blatantly make a slimming claim on its packaging, it does infer weight loss by highlighting that it’s “for people who care about their figures”. Dr Stuart’s Slim Plus, also available from Sainsbury’s, combines fennel with linden leaves, dandelion root, corn silk, galangal root, green oat and natural orange flavour, and claims it’s “a really refreshing way to kick start your day and get into shape”. But can having a brew really help you lose weight? It sounds too good to be true – and according to most experts that really is the case. In fact, some herbal teas may actually do more harm than good if they include certain herbs that have potent diuretic or laxative effects. Excessive urination, diarrhoea and stomach cramps may be just some of the side effects associated with some of the more unusual . To date, most research has focussed on green tea. Both green and black teas come from the same plant – Camelia sinensis – but the leaves are processed differently. As a result, both teas contain similar amounts of flavonoids, which act as powerful antioxidants in the body. However, because of the processing differences, they contain different types of flavonoids. As black tea is fermented, the flavonoids have a more complicated structure and consist of theaflavins and thearubigins. In contrast, unfermented green tea contains flavonoids called catechins, which have a simpler structure. The most abundant of these catechins is epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG. Together with caffeine – which is found in both green and black tea – it’s thought that catechins, and specifically EGCG, are responsible for the slimming effects of green tea. Consequently, research has focussed on these ingredients. Fat Burning Properties. Sadly though, whilst studies have revealed that green tea may reduce fat and boost metabolism, most work has been carried out in test tubes or animals such as rats and mice. In fact, very few studies have looked at the fat- burning or weight loss potential of green tea in humans – and in many cases, although a positive link has been found between green tea consumption and weight loss, these studies have been poorly designed or included only a handful of subjects. Calorie Counting. Bottom line: more well- designed clinical studies are needed to firmly confirm the weight loss benefits of green tea. Cynics argue that any weight loss benefits are probably down to the calorie savings made by switching from a milky, sugary cup of black tea to a calorie- free cup of green or herbal tea. And in reality, this is a feasible argument. A standard mug of tea with semi- skimmed milk and 1tsp sugar contains 3. Four cups a day totals 1. It’s clear that the slimming benefits of tea need more investigation, but that shouldn’t put you off drinking your regular brew. Whether you prefer black or green tea, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that both can potentially benefit health, thanks to the antioxidants they contain. Health Benefits Clear. Whilst the slimming benefits of green tea remains unclear, a large amount of robust research has focussed on the overall health benefits of flavonoids in tea. As a result, many health experts now suggest that as part of a healthy lifestyle, four cups a day could help to protect our bodies from the effects of free radicals – potentially harmful molecules that can damage cells. In turn, this may help to lower our risk of many health problems including heart disease, cancer, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease and even cataracts. And I don't usually like Mountain Dew at all. Puddings: The puddings are one of my favorite Medifast foods because they are so versatile! You can make a lot of different things with them! As pudding: The puddings can be lumpy if you don't blend them well. They set up faster if you use very cold water. You can also add flavorings to the puddings, like sugar free syrups or spices. For custard: add 1 beaten egg white or 2- 3 Tbsp Egg Beaters to the cold pudding and then microwave it in a large bowl in 3. I love the chocolate pudding this way; reminds me of cooked Jello pudding. For the BEST shakes: use 1 packet of pudding + 1 cup of water + 1/2 cup of small ice cubes. Rich and creamy and once again, you can add flavors. I like coffee in my chocolate shakes. Banana pudding makes a delicious shake, and it is great with PB2 added if you like peanut butter and banana. For a . I blend everything with a half can of soda first and then when it is smooth, add the rest and blend. The chocolate + root beer tastes like a Tootsie Roll to me, and the vanilla + root beer tastes like a root beer float. The vanilla is also good with a diet orange soda (tastes like creamsicle!)You can also make soft serve ice cream with the puddings, similar to a Wendy's Frosty. Just put 1/2 cup cold water + 1 packet pudding + 1 cup small ice cubes in a mini blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Great stuff as is, or you can add flavorings, coffee, peanut butter, or cream cheese. My favorite is the peanut butter (1 Tbsp) but I don't do it too often. Packs in too many calories. I sometimes add 1 tsp plain unsweetened cocoa for a dark chocolate effect. I am not a huge fan of vanilla pudding, but it can be made into shakes and frosties and then you can add flavors, like sugar free syrups, Walden Farms strawberry jelly, or a spoonful of Matcha powder for a green tea shake. My favorite is the French Toast shake. You can make a totally simple, on plan meal that is the same size as a regular candy bar and, if you use chocolate pudding, looks much like a Crunch bar. This recipe uses no additional condiments so it is a real winner! Mix up one packet of pudding according to package directions. Place one Medifast Crunch bar in a bowl and microwave it for 1. Smoosh up the crunch bar with a spatula or spoon and then stir in the pudding. Mix and smoosh well until it is all incorporated. Spread this mixture into a container the size of two candy bars, or two smaller containers. I line my glass pan with wax paper. Spread it out and freeze for 2 hours. Remove from container and if you used one larger container, cut the big bar in half and wrap one for later use (keep frozen). This makes 2 Medifast meals and they keep well in the freezer and are even better after freezing overnight! The flavor combinations are endless. For a Crunch bar flavor I use a caramel crunch bar and a chocolate pudding. Some other yummy combinations: chocolate pudding + peanut butter barchocolate pudding + mint chocolate barbanana pudding + peanut butter barvanilla pudding + lemon meringue bar + 1/2 (or more) of a Medifast strawberry lemonade calorieburn infuser packet = strawberry lemonade calorieburn bar! So good. Try different combinations and enjoy! Soft Serve: I tried making it with crushed ice. I tried using a snow cone maker and then adding the mix. I just never liked the texture. And when you freeze it to make it harder, it gets solid as a rock. Give it a shot with crushed or shaved ice. A lot of people do like it that way. But I finally got awesome, creamy, real ice cream- like results when I started using a Mini Ice Cream Maker. It's tiny and makes single serve portions of ice cream or frozen yogurt, so I just mixed my Medifast Soft Serve packet with 3/4 cup of cold water and put it in the fridge to chill for a half hour or so, then poured it into the ice cream maker, turned it on and had ice cream in under 1. I eat it right out of the little frozen bowl it's made in, so it stays cold and doesn't melt as I eat it. Be sure the lid is seated properly and then press down on it every so often so that you don't have this issue. I also like to make the Soft Serve into a shake. Just add about 3/4- 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of ice in the blender. Pretty good shakes. You can also make cookies out of the soft serve. I found this recipe on the Medifast forums. They are pretty good and filling; they turn out flat and wrinkly and soft/chewy. When I first tried one warm I thought, ? I thought they were fantastic! So I highly recommend freezing these. Soft Serve Cookies. In a bowl, combine 1 packet of Soft Serve (I used chocolate mint), 1/2 tsp baking powder, 2 Tbsp Egg Beaters, and 3 Tbsp water. The cream soups can be fine with a short soak, but unless you want to break a tooth on a bean or pea you ought to soak the chili, chicken noodle soup, and wild rice soup for a few hours. You can add the boiling water and then put the soup in a thermos for later. You can add the water the night before and keep it in the fridge overnight, and reheat when ready to eat. But please soak the soups. They are so much better. Flavor can be brightened by using low sodium broth instead of water when making the soups. You can add black pepper, hot sauce, onion powder, etc, but remember to count the condiments. Also, you can add veggies to your soups but remember to subtract them from your Lean and Green. So, if you use a half cup of veggies in your soup, remember you only have 2 veggie servings left for dinner. You can add some of your Lean to a soup as well, such as cubed chicken, but remember to subtract it from your dinner later. Cream of Chicken is excellent with some fresh spinach added, or some chopped cooked mushrooms for a . It's also great with a bit of curry powder added. Crazy Ways to Burn Fat While You Sleep! The most aggravating part is that rebound effect. Sure, you lose weight ! It seems obvious that, if you take in fewer calories, you’ll shed the pounds. To some degree, that’s true, but it isn’t the whole story. In fact, it’s probably not even half of it. The primary problem is that, even if the weight is lost, it does no good if it returns. The answer is really quite simple. You know that initial early rapid weight loss? The part that makes a new diet seem so great? Most of that isn’t actually fat. Then, if you restrict the calories too much, which is what most rapid- loss diets demand, your body’s metabolic rate slows down. Part of that slowing is done by cannibalizing your own muscle tissue. What’s worse, that slow- down can become permanent! The result is that well- known rebound effect, of course, but also the much worse problem of a near- permanent change in your body’s caloric need. First, forget about those super- duper quick weight loss diets. They simply don’t work, and though experience has likely told you that fact, now you know why. So you need to increase your muscle mass. That, of course, means that you should exercise. There are two main types: aerobic, which increases your metabolism, and resistance, which builds muscle mass. Aerobic exercise improves your overall health, but to lose weight, you need to increase muscle mass, and that requires resistance exercising. Any exercise that increases your strength will also increase muscle mass. Therefore, any exercise that involves working against gravity, such as push ups, will also work. Instead of focusing on calories, focus on types of food. You need protein- rich food, and, contrary to what you’re generally told, you also need fats—lots of fats. Of course, they need the right kinds of fats—but they aren’t what mainstream medicine wants you to believe. The myth that saturated fat is bad comes from junk science that confuses trans fats, which are artificially saturated, with naturally saturated fats, like in butter and meat. They replace naturally saturated fat in the body. Half of all cell membranes consist of saturated fats, and trans fats can destabilize them, resulting in nutrition being unable to enter cells and toxins being unable to leave. Obviously, if you want to increase muscle mass, you need saturated fats. It’s easy to get enough omega- 6 fat, but the problem is that nearly everyone eats far too much, because it’s the sort that’s routinely used in fast and prepared foods.
